Phyllis Dobbs in Studio

Phyllis in her treehouse like studio.

Doesn’t it make you feel good to smile? Phyllis is all about creating smiles with her art filled with color and whimsy. Fun and vibrant colors, whimsy art and design – these are all infused in everything created by Phyllis, which she in turn licenses for fabric collections with Quilting Treasures, and on gift, garden, stationery and kitchen products through her agent, Jewel Branding and Licensing. Phyllis adds this same love of color and whimsy in her patterns for quilting and sewing.

Phyllis’ art is also on a multitude of products in her online Zazzle store.  Most can be customized with your personalized information.

Phyllis loves to spread her “smile” theory (yes, that’s whimsy with color) with workshops and lectures.  Just contact her and she will be glad to discuss a program for your shop, guild or event.

Phyllis has been busy creating for quite a while. She started her creative career 27 years ago by designing counted cross stitch, quilt and sewing patterns.  After creating over 2000 designs and patterns for product lines for manufacturers, books, magazines and kits, she focused on her art and fabric designs.

During the process of painting and designing, Phyllis developed extensive computer kills with Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign in addition to other specialty software programs for formatting her art, patterns and publications.

Now for a little personal information – Phyllis grew up in Mobile, AL, where she gained a love of the coast. She received her formal design training at the University of Alabama, where she also gained a love of football in addition to her education.  Since college, she has enjoyed living in Birmingham AL with her husband and spoiled black cat (OK, maybe they are both spoiled but the cat flaunts it).  She creates her art and designs daily in her studio that overlooks woods and feels like a treehouse.

Some highlights of Phyllis’ career include:

  • Designing custom needlework designs for vintage clothing for Polo Ralph Lauren
  • Achieving her dream of designing fabrics (her fabrics are with Quilting Treasures, a Cranston company)
  • Licensing her art on fabulous products
  • Authoring 3 full size quilt books (the latest is Asymmetrical Quilts from Leisure Arts)
  • Numerous TV appearances both locally and on PBS
  • Winning the Plaid Horizons Award, a prestigious grant for career development
